Helping You With Your Writing and Educational Training Needs!

What Sets me apart from other writers

Throughout my educational career, I’ve always treasured writing and have been creating written materials for both my students as well as for other educators.

As a prolific reader, I began writing early in my teaching career (eighties and nineties) when it became apparent that much of the textbook material was, well, dull. It was not interesting, it did not sparkle, nor did it give my students any indication of the thinking and disciplinary work behind the…

What sets me apart from other teacher trainers

I’m a recently retired National Board Certified 7-12 classroom teacher of social studies/history (including interdisciplinary work with science). Early in my teaching career we had overhead projectors, one teletype with an Internet connection that had to be checked out and wheeled into our rooms, and chalkboards! About Michael

In the summer of 2020, I retired from four rewarding decades of teaching. As a National Board Certified teacher (NBCT), former National Council for the Social Studies president, past Social Studies Teacher of the Year, I’ve taught every social studies subject in every secondary grade.

Early in my career I realized that the keys to helping my students grow included sparking their curiosity, using engaging teaching strategies, creating thoughtful and active lessons, and basing these lessons around inquiry and intellectual standards.

As well as in the readings that I create for my students, as a freelance educational writer I have put these lessons to work in my writing for organizations such as Pearson, C-SPAN, the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS), Blake eLearning, Educational Leadership (ASCD), the Los Angeles County Office of Education, the Bureau for Education and Research (BER), the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), and WGBH of Boston.

I’m eager to help you with your educational writing/training needs.

Professional Testimonials

I took Michael Yell’s NCSS workshop on Strategies and Tools for Exceeding Expectations of the Common Core and C3. Mike is a collector of the best strategies and tools that teachers can use to be the most effective in their classrooms. And more importantly, Mike opens a space of experiential learning, putting teachers in the place of students, to experience these strategies and tools first hand, and then opens up discussion for how we could imbue those strategies and tools with our own unique teaching style and have them work for us. Mike reveals the magic of teaching and makes us all magicians!

When educators are looking for professional development or written help, they like to know the people they turn to have earned their wings in the real world.  Fortunately, Mike Yell brings authentic experience in spades.  I have never known a teacher who keeps up on educational theory and research as well as Mr. Yell, nor have I met one with as much hunger and curiosity who follows up in his own content area so consistently.  He also manages to find time to publish and present workshops for teachers all over the country on engaging critical thinking strategies in social studies.  If anyone asks me where they can tap into a wealth of wisdom and experience seldom found in one individual, Mike Yell is the first name I recommend.
